Burgers on Broadway, Punchbowl

A new burger joint has arrived in Punchbowl. Burgers on Broadway pays homage to American diners and Australian old-school milk bars, where the focus was solely on serving up a good, hearty burger at a good price. Owners Mohammed and Mazin put their heart and soul into quality and consistency at their eatery.

Tucked away at Broadway Plaza in Punchbowl, the restaurant boasts a casual but industrial vibe. Decked out with timber walls and 40-year-old ladders, Mohammed tells me that the space reminds him of his dad’s shed in the backyard, a shed that was crammed with a bunch of old, neglected things.

Similar to a backyard shed, you can come to Burgers on Broadway to relax, to talk with your friends as you enjoy a few burgers and fries. Mazin and Mohammed purposely didn’t install a TV and never play music, so that diners don’t get distracted and can have a nice meal while socialising with friends.

The burger menu is eclectic, ranging from the Bollywood burger to the Yokum burger or the Outback burger. You won’t find tomato or barbeque sauce on any of the burgers here. Instead there’s a whopping eight sauces that make their way onto the burgers, including chilli mayo, smoky mango chilli sauce and prego sauce. But if you’re a traditionalist, you can pick up a bottle of tomato or barbeque sauce from the condiments on the ladder.

A range of the burgers are served on our brioche buns, including the fantastic steak special and sliders. There are three sliders to choose from: Lil Zac, Lil Cheese and Lil Chicken. The Lil Zac is a beef slider with Zac sauce (named after Mazin’s son Zac), which blends mayo, mustard and fresh herbs. It’s fabulously dill-heavy and brings a herbaceous kick to the mini burger. The Lil Cheese is unsurprisingly a mini version of the cheeseburger and Lil Chicken, you guessed it, a small chicken burger.

The steak special is served on Brasserie Bread brioche bun with beetroot, tomato, cucumber and lettuce with a side of golden fries. It’s a messy, beautiful endeavour eating this burger.  There are also plenty of sides to go with your burger, including corn on the cob, salad and coleslaw.

And if you’re parched after wolfing down a burger, go for one of the fruit crushes that are made with sorbet.  Take your pick from mixed berry, passionfruit, pineapple or lemon. And if that’s not sweet enough for you, a Pat & Sticks ice cream sandwich for dessert is the answer!
