I return to The Butcher’s Block in Wahroonga to see what owners George and Anthony have been up to lately. I visited The Butcher’s Block in February when the father-and-son duo first opened the cafe, and knew right there was something special brewing here.
Anthony describes the menu as feel good food, and I can’t agree more. The dense bread & butter pudding using leftover Brasserie Bread pastries (like our delicious croissant, for instance) leaves me wanting more. Today it’s made with a bit of chocolate, but George tells me that usually it’s dotted with raisins. Regardless, the pudding is deliciously moreish and perfect with the accompanying creme anglaise.
One of George’s favourites on the breakfast menu is the truffle eggs – truffle infused olive oil is blended into the eggs, then topped with smoked salmon on a slice of toasted Brasserie Bread sourdough. It’s a trifecta of awesome: the flavours are strong, the eggs are fluffy and the sourdough is chewy.
Another one of George’s favourite is the bircher muesli, a gluten-free brekkie bowl of crushed nuts, almond meal, shredded apple, yoghurt and orange glaze, topped with half of a caramelised pear. Packed full of flavours and great textures, it’s a delightful and nutritious breakfast.
The French toast made with Brasserie Bread sourdough is also very unique. The sourdough makes the texture a bit crunchier and the flavour deeper than your regular French toast. Served with caramelised banana and a housemade orange glaze, it’s a full-on breakfast that’s perfect for sweet tooths.
But if a savoury breakfast is more your thing, try the medley of button and enoki mushrooms with rocket, marjoram vinaigrette, parmesan and a poached egg on top of sliced sourdough bread. The open sandwich boasts a bit of acidity, but mellows it out with the delicate mushrooms.
At lunch you can’t go past the delicious meatball sliders with three cheeses, which we ploughed through on our last visit. You can check these bad boys out here.
