Behind-the-scenes

Let me catch my breath. We’ve gone dark lately thanks to the Easter School Holiday Baking Program. Kids tramping all around, floors floured. And yesterday, Channel 9’s Today Show brought their cheery weatherman Steve Jacobs in to broadcast their weather reports live from the Bakery, having heard of the Kids Baking Classes. From 6am – 8.30am, the crew did 6 live crosses from 6 different locations throughout Brasserie (with a few of us mulling around behind the cameras, starstruck and sleep-deprived) Starting from outside the Bakery on the dot at 6am, to the Mixers, then the Ovens, straight into the Café, then fighting flour with flour in the Training Room. Nothing was better than watching bleary-eyed Café regulars troop in for their usual coffee and do a double take at the cameras.  And the Today Show weather team & cameramen were a fantastic bunch – really genuine down to earth guys, keen to learn more and get their facts straight about what Artisan Baking is all about.

Also, on Saturday, we set our alarms to EARLY because our Kids Baking Classes on Channel 7 Disney went to air! They had filmed this segment back in late February and it took half a day of filming to get our 5 minutes on air. Shae Brewster, Angela Field (the producer) and crew were such delights to work with, it was definitely one of the more easy-going shoots we’ve had here at the Bakery.

Not to mention Maddie, David’s daughter, getting her 15 minutes on camera, our budding TV star for sure. Girl ran a marathon in the morning and still had the energy to work it on camera. I’m an amateur at this, but I still find it fascinating to watch television presenters at work from behind-the-scenes – they have this natural easy charisma that just flows, and the ability to project such high levels of energy that go through the roof (on-set) and punches you right in the face out the television screen. Yes, and I mean ‘punches you’ – it’s a little trippy being in the same room listening to them act right next to you, while you’re watching them on the little screen camera. They seem to almost POP out at you on camera.

see what I mean?

Here’s the final result!

Another nice little thing we’ve established here are our Brasserie Bread Screen Kids, and for adults, the Rent-a-Crowd. We’ve got a pool of regulars who I contact (usually in a bit of a panic and tizzy, thank you for being so patient dear parents and crowd) when we get an interesting opportunity. I usually bribe them with baking classes or pancakes because sometimes, the things we ask these kids to do is truly an Ask. For example, daring to alter the school run routine by asking parents to ferry them here and back, getting them to wake up at the crack of dawn (which is a recognised sin during school holidays), or asking them to look happy while they shape their little dough piece  5 times longer than necessary.

Tell you what. It’s been a trippy week at the Bakery that’s for sure. And it’s not over yet!
